DF’s controls are pretty weird, but I didn’t have that hard of a time with it. I think people are too lazy to try to figure things out or look stuff up on the wiki. Everyone exaggerates the difficulty so of it so much.
For those unfamiliar… If you can get past the ASCII-ugliness (or perhaps think of it as 8-bit era retro, like BASIC programmed games on C-64 or 800XL), it’s a really in-depth city-building/strategy game like the Age of Mythology or the Caesar series. Actually it’s probably more in depth than those games (and not just by digging), because of dependencies and other things that can be done. And unlike most games, everything is in the folder and with no registrys – so it’s thumb-drive portable.
you dont buy it, its free and its amazing. its on bay12games. you CAN donate though to show your support for it cause the guy making it isnt getting anything but satisfaction from constantly updating the game with new features and patches
I like it when there are screw ups like that. I like to read their thoughts and jealousies cause one of them decided to take the 1×2 room and now regrets it.
i say suck it up and abandon the fortress or just lord over it and watch it fail and live with the bad decisions, try to save what you can and learn from your mistake and adore the tales of failed fortresses.
Never knew that, But then again I am rather like the growing list of failed fortresses.
I think half the fun is telling others about it all going to shit in a blink of an eye and having to abandon the fortress. I remember digging wrong once and flooding a map … more often than not though it comes down to starving and watching them all throw tantrums and break things..It.s just plain amusing to me.
On another note after watching all your vids, I think things will be better for my dwarves
a quick tip for people who are new to dwarf fortress. when selecting a location try to pick a spot where the mountains have sand. you can check this by moving over the mountain and looking where it shows the types of ores. With sand you can make farms , sell glass and build with glass.
If you dont like the game your in atm, or made some bad decisions since your last save, just crash the game using CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and killing the dwarfort program. Then it wont save your progress and the next time you start DF it loads the previous save.
I’m trying to get into this game, problem is I keep messing up some minor detail and I end up not liking the fortress I make.
I’d like to save a game and reload it in case I mess up, but I can’t find an option to load a saved game without quitting and restarting DF and selecting continue.

do you not use numbers for elevation like you do for cliffs on purpose?

Comment made on March 16th, 2010 at 12:18 amIt’s a good guide, I’m starting to be able to do something with DF now, but his accent drives me crazy, subtitling everything will be nice.

Comment made on March 16th, 2010 at 4:21 amFailing is fun! Don’t worry about the small stuff, your dorfs won’t care much if you have a 8×7 room when they are all supposed to be 7×7
Comment made on March 16th, 2010 at 5:13 amYou uh, minimised it?
Not exit, eh?

Thanks.
I’ve been doing that, I just wish there was a way of re-loading a game without having to kill the bloody thing.
